As they have progressed steadily into their forties, the members of music band Tokio have become a marginal presence on the pop music charts. Instead, they have established themselves on Japanese television as one of the most popular presenters.

A scandal ripped through the lineup last year, however, when member Tatsuya Yamaguchi was exposed as having invited teenagers to his apartment and, apparently in a drunken state, having kissed one. He resigned from the group and left the entertainment world.

Tokio has soldiered on.

One of the remaining members, Shigeru Joshima, has found solace in the arms of a model and did what any 48-year-old in his right mind would do by marrying this lady who is half his age.

That lady is the beautiful gravure model Risa Kikuchi, who is a sprightly 24. Of course, this being Japan, she is pregnant. No condoms is a surefire way to marriage.

Making her gravure debut in 2017, Kikuchi is a haafu: her father is Bangladeshi. To be fair, she was not especially well known in the industry — with, from what we can tell, one image DVD and a single major weekly magazine shoot to her name — but will now be forever renowned as the girl who bagged Shigeru Joshima. The former group SMAP is another case in point: only Takuya Kimura is married — and to another celebrity. Management and contracts seem to silence the sound of wedding bells.

Tatsuya Yamaguchi had been married (to a former model) but divorced in 2016, which is perhaps another reason he was drinking heavily and kissing underage girls.

We have hopes, then, that Aya will return under a new professional name with a different agency. As far as we know, she hasn’t suffered from a decline in popularity that should prompt her agency to end her contract, though the gradol scene is infamously crowded and ruthless — and, to be blunt, Aya is edging toward 30, which means jukujo territory for idols of her ilk and a whole other kind of image to the one she has projected in her career so far.

But this leads us to another question… What is it about retiring top gravure idols right now? Have we arrived at a changing of the guard?

Prompted by a reader’s tweet, we are looking today at the sex scenes from a Japanese film. Called Shonen (娼年) in Japanese, or Call Boy in English, it was released in 2018. An adaptation of a book by Ira Ishida, the title basically says it all. Tori Matsuzaka plays a male prostitute, who gets the chance to service some beautiful Japanese actresses in a series of graphic sex scenes.

With this movie, there’s frankly a lot of material to choose from and the following are just a few highlights. (Our apologies for the variable quality of the images.)

The stress of this led her to take eighteen months off gravure and spend time studying in Australia.

In the interview, she also sheds light on the reality of the entertainment industry. One day her agency got a phone call from a magazine, which claimed to have a compromising picture of Sayama and a man — whom she thinks she just met once at a party and that the photo was something casual taken with other people — that it would publish in the next issue. The agency decided that the only way to stop the photo being published and damaging her career was for Sayama to strip for an all-nude shoot. She put her foot down, though, and refused to show her nipples.

This shoot is probably her final one. An image DVD and photo book will go on sale early next year.

The gravure idol world is entering a transition period, it seems, with several high-profile retirements recently. This is always a sad thing for fans but it’s better than the “graduation” is officially announced, so to speak, rather than just the idols fading from view when the phone calls from the weekly magazines stop ringing.

Joining Sayama in the post-gravure landscape is the slinky Aya Kawasaki, while Yuka Ogura and Rena Takeda have also indicated shifts away from magazine shoots.

The growing popularity of Halloween in Japan has resulted in massive street cosplay parties, particularly in areas like Shibuya in Tokyo.

That have been adverse effects, too, which is almost inevitable when so many thousands of (mostly young) people come together. Last year, in particular, seemed like a turning point when a truck was turned over in Shibuya by drunken revellers. Some used the street parties as a mere excuse to grope women or take panchira underskirt photos.

This year’s Halloween in Shibuya was crazily crowded but a little more subdued, with tighter police controls back again after a brief period of relaxation by the authorities. Nonetheless, there are still nine arrests for such crimes as groping and disorderly conduct.

We spotted what has become something of a tradition: people dressed up in Tenga-themed costumes. We find it hard to imagine another country where people would wear clothing themed around adult toys to a Halloween party.

There were also very skimpy outfits aplenty, notwithstanding the rather chilly late-October temperatures.

Amidst the thousands of people on the streets, you might be lucky enough to spot someone famous — even a porn star. Yua Mikami once donned a Starbucks costume for Halloween.

Following in her footsteps, so to speak, adult video idol Kanon Kanade (奏音かのん) decided she wanted to join in the fun on the streets of Shibuya.

She happily announced it was her first experience of a Halloween party. She went on October 26th, the closest Saturday to Halloween and just as popular a day to go as October 31st itself. She selected a suitably skimpy outfit (in the camouflage style that is very popular with women going to these parties in Japan) and seemed to go alone. Whether she was expecting to be recognized or not is hard to say, but she was apparently cornered by two men right in front of Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station. (To be fair, Kanade is not an especially famous porn star by some standards, so the men might have just been cornered someone whom they regarded as an attractive, alluringly dressed woman.)

She was then groped by the men, making little attempt to hide what they were doing in public. Kanade did not seem to consent to this, as video captured of the incident appears to show, though Kanade did not then complain about her treatment afterwards on social media as we might expect she would.

There are some unanswered questions, then, but one’s thing clear. If the police and authorities allow the Halloween street party to keep happening, it is possible that you may just bump into a sexy Japanese porn star. Just don’t touch her without her consent, OK?
