Probably few things have caught on in Japan as quickly and astonishingly as Halloween.

A few years ago, there might have been a few Halloween parties here and there, and so overly enthusiastic gaijin walking the streets in bad zombie costumes.

But now Shibuya and Roppongi — in particular — literally explode into an orgy of cosplay, much of it not technically connected to Halloween but to any fairytale, video game, or meme that is currently trending.

Halloween cosplay is especially popular with young female Japanese. It’s perfect timing in terms of the climate. The autumn chill hasn’t fully set in yet so you can still brave the night with only a flimsy costume on.

Halloween cosplay in Japan is now so popular it happens not only on the night of October 31st — this year it’s a Saturday so expect total chaos — but on the evening before and on most weekends throughout October.

To celebrate Halloween, here are four Gravure idols showing us how to wear costumes right.

The completionist side to our personality just wants to post this, even though it’s not new.

What with all the fuss earlier this year of the porn debut of Momona Kito as Yua Mikami, we want to continue our exploration of this theme: the afterlife of Japan’s “respectable” idols.

Remember AKB48’s Rumi Yonezawa?

Well, since her departure from the group in 2012, it seems her career hit hard times. So many idols are processed through the well-grease machinery of the industry that there will inevitably be casualties that fall by the wayside.

And given the open secret that idols (Gravure, music, otaku) have to do makura-eigyo (i.e., have sex with people to get ahead), they end their idol careers at least trained for something else.

And so an increasing number go into porn and no doubt others change their names and become hostesses and call girls.

Rumi Yonezawa went into porn with the Muteki label (who specialize in “catching” these ex-idols) and also did this very nice full-front (“hair nude”) shoot for the occasion. She took the new stage name of Rika Shirota.

The latest leaked sex photos victim is Nozomi Tsuji

Only this week we had Mayu Harada of Keyakizaka46, whose leaked photos of her kissing her former junior high school teacher and now boyfriend led to her departure from the idol group.

Now it’s the turn of SKE48 idol Nozomi Tsuji to worry about her career after images of her apparently with a boyfriend have somehow leaked online.

And the photos are much more explicit that Mayu Harada’s sentimental kisses and embraces.

Nozomi Tsuji is shown giving oral sex to a lucky guy in what seems like a love hotel. For better or worse, the gentleman’s member is censored in the image.

Nozomi Tsuji is a “trainee” (kenkyusei) at SKE48, the Nagoya sister group of AKB48. (Don’t confuse her with Nozomi Tsuji, the tarento and former Morning Museum idol.)

The media is currently chattering about whether Jessica Michibata’s marriage to Jenson Button is already over, just a year after they tied the knot.

Fellow idol (this time Keyakizaka46) Mayu Harada was also caught kissing her former teacher — and promptly fired.

And it’s not just the idols. As always, the management is also up to no good. AKB48 manager Takashi Nodera was arrested for filming idols while they got changed.

Other Scandals

Drugs remain a massive taboo for Japan’s celebrities, despite being very common in the entertainment world (along with sleeping with people to get ahead, plastic surgery and Yakuza connections — but no one talks about this).

Gravure idol Ai Takabe was arrested for cocaine possession, spelling the end to her career.

Former idol-turned-stripper/porn star Minako Komukai also continued to have trouble with drugs.

Event of the Year

The Shunga exhibition in Tokyo broke censorship taboos, while Halloween was probably the biggest cosplay festa in central Tokyo ever. Oh, and a Japanese porn actor, Shimiken, opened a “poo curry” restaurant (and then announced it was closing too).

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Tenga also ran a massive campaign: a huge bonanza of events and promos.

Crime Story of the Year

The fetish or kinky crime of the year has to be the return of the storm drain pervert and the wincing yet cautionary tale of the man who got his penis cut off by an angry cuckold — and then flushed down the toilet!

Also, a former Yokohama school principal claimed to have had sex with 12,000 prostitutes over the course of 65 trips to Manila!

Set for release on February 1st, 2016, “Climax x No.4″ is the third Japanese porn release by former SKE48 idol Momona Kito.

Originally she appeared in a one-off film, “Princess Peach”, by AV label Muteki in 2015 under the new name Yua Mikami, which became the most sensational debut of the year.

It was such a hit they managed to persuade her to do more.

The most high-profile recent graduate into the porn industry, Momona Kito starred in an ostensibly one-off porn release by Muteki as Yua Mikami. It was such a hit, she has since decided to do more and make a whole career of it.

Rina Nakanishi

Rina Nakanishi was the pioneer, laying the ground for the other idols who have followed in her wake (or at least those who have made it public knowledge). She made her porn debut in 2010 as Riko (or Rico) Yamaguchi.

Risa Naruse

Risa Naruse was one of the early AKB48 idols to start a new career in porn and nude modeling. She chose the name Haruna Aisaka for her new life.

Eri Takamatsu

Like her predecessor Rina Nakanishi, former AKB48 idol Eri Takamatsu not only became a porn star but also spilled the beans to the tabloids about the truth of the idol and entertainment industry — that the idols may well be banned from having boyfriends but certainly do have sex (often against their will) with the older men who call the shots in the business. Takamatsu made her debut as Risa Tachibana in 2013.

Machiko Tezuka

Former SDN48 idol Machiko Tezuka has changed her name quite a few times but the important thing is that she has stripped down for some hair nude (full-frontal) shoots showing off her ravishing body.

Rumi Yonezawa

Former AKB48 idol Rumi Yonezawa has stripped nude since leaving her illustrious days in the group behind, and made her porn debut as Rika Shirota.

Minako Komukai (bonus entry)

Not an AKB48 idol but an interesting example of a post-Gravure career. The seriously busty Minako Komukai broke taboos by telling the world what the world of Gravure and music idols is really all about: sex. If you run the agencies, you can sleep with any hottie you pretty much want. She then started a new career as a stripper, and starred in soft-core porn (the third entry in the Flower and Snake series) and fully fledged AV (selling 200,000 DVDs of her first release).

And then she suddenly found herself in trouble with the police over drugs, which has resulted in jail time. Of course, we are sure it is only a coincidence that she got arrested after she became a whistleblower (sure, there are no drugs among the mainstream idols and entertainment stars, right?).

First she shaved off her hair in a penitence for having sex. Now she is getting fat.

AKB48’s Minami Minegishi has gained weight to pose for this “chubby” idol picture.

Why? Because it is a campaign for the luxury fitness gym RIZAP, which runs intensive programs for getting metropolitan people into shape.

Here is Minegishi in her buff form again.

If you live in Tokyo, you would be familiar with RIZAP for the loud advertising trucks they drive around city, depicting before-and-after images of unhealthy bodies transforming into muscular ones.

The gym has been criticized by some, however, for its overly intensive programs which can have bad effects on the body, especially women (e.g. affecting their menstrual cycle). After all, it can’t be good to go from slightly overweight to muscular so suddenly.

A triumph at last for basic human rights and fans of idols in Japan.

A 23-year-old female member of an idol group who was sued for around ¥9.9 million (over $80,000) for breach of contract by dating a fan can celebrate — and her bank account can let out a sigh of relief — as her former management agency’s suit has been dismissed by the Tokyo District Court.

The girl — unnamed in the media reports — had made a contract with the company in April 2012 when she was just 19. It contained a clause saying that damages would be sought if she had a relationship with a fan. She started dating a male fan in around December 2013. She told the agency she wanted to quite in July 2014 and did not appear in a concert as planned. The agency then filed a suit against her for compensation.

“Having relations with the opposite sex is part of our liberty to pursue happiness. Even taking into account the special circumstances of being an idol, a ban on this was taking things too far,” ruled the judge on January 18th.

Many idols have been forced to resign or have lost their positions in music groups due to the notorious “no-dating” rules.

A recent victim is Mayu Harada of Keyakizaka46, who had to leave the group when pictures emerged of her kissing her former teacher.

In AKB48, Rino Sashihara was exiled to a smaller sister group but ultimately survived her sex scandal to become one of the most popular and powerful girls in the AKB roster.

Likewise, Minami Minegishi made headlines when she shaved her head as penance for her “sex crime” but has since bounced back.

If you are expendable, though, you end up out on the street. Yuka Masuda, for example, was sacked from AKB48 for having a relationship with a male colleague.

Management companies have been known to sue idols who breach the no-dating clauses in their contracts. Not only the idols, but fans who cross that forbidden line and have relationships with idols have also been known to face suits.

Are we now entering a new age where idols will be able to have relationships just like ordinary human beings?

After coming very close to stripping off and showing us her nude body last year, Yuka Kuramochi has finally done it: taken all her clothes off.

That being said, sadly this isn’t a porn debut for the famously big-butted gravure idol nor even a full-frontal hair nude shoot.

But it’s the most naked she’s ever got and boy, are we glad she did it.

The series of “butt artisan” shots in Weekly Playboy showed us her unclothed ass as well as once again coming close to revealing a fully shaved paipan pussy. Come on, Yuka, you are just one step away from the inevitable now!

Former SKE48 idol Momona Kito had such a hit with her first AV release that she was persuaded to make a full career out of it, releasing more films in 2016.

The one-off release on the Muteki label generated a lot of excitement last year and also placed Kito (performing under the name Yua Mikami) firmly in the growing list of AKB and sister group members who had “graduated” onto careers in Japanese porn, which given the dark side of the idol industry (mafia involvement, managers grooming idols for sex) is not such a leap in a sense.

One of the gravure idols gaining more and more mainstream exposure for reasons that should be obvious, Hitomi Yasueda is known for having a great ass and having an armor fetish.
