Gravure idols (the Japanese equivalent of glamour models) are known primarily for their big breasts and busts. These are lovely to look at (and imagine touching or more), but there are some other functions. For example, Jun Amaki demonstrated a novel way to play with a fidget spinner, while Erina Kamiya can hold objects of all shapes and sizes with her bust.

Not content with having conquered the Japanese adult video scene, former SKE48 idol and now top porn star Yua Mikami (Momona Kito) decided to take over Halloween as well.

Japanese porn stars seem to enjoy taking interesting career paths, either as completely new stages in their professional lives or as extra gigs alongside their regular porn.

Yuma Asami beat cancer and relaunched herself as a singer.

Continuing the trend for former AKB48 idols trying to make a name for themselves post-AKB with a raunchy photo shoot, Aika Ota is the latest young lady to show us what she’s got.

She follows in the glorious footseps of Mariya Nagao, Aki Takajo, Satomi Kaneko, and Natsumi Hirajima.

Just recently, Haruka Shimada preceded her imminent graduation with a sultry shoot that suggests she may be keen to go further in the near future.

Born in 1994, Ota graduated from AKB48 in April 2017 after time spend in both the main AKB48 group and its Fukuoka spin-off, HKT48.

Along with Rie Miyazawa’s classic “Santa Fe,” though, Ishida’s joyful contributions have lingered firmly in the popular consciousness.

Eri Ishida is, of course, no longer a spring chicken but she is still working in the entertainment industry. In fact, she is releasing a new photo book in December — and it’s a hair nude one!

Yes, Eri Ishida is going to her roots and isn’t afraid to show her age while doing it. She’s a ripe 56 years old and looks frankly awesome. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it a thousand more times: older Japanese women (jukujo) are incredibly attractive.

24 years on from the release of her photo book “Tsumi” (literally, “crime” but the English title was “Immorale”) shot by Helmut Newton, she is back with another hair nude collection and we can’t wait to see the results. Unfortunately only quite tame shots have been released so far as previews. She has again worked with a foreign photographer for the book — veteran German photographer Peter Lindbergh.

Fun fact: the book cover is by the art director of the successful shunga exhibition held in Tokyo a couple of years ago.

Eri Ishida also recently showed off her toned body for a promotional campaign for the gym Rizap, which likes to use famous people to advertise its services (past brand faces include Minami Minegishi).

Should we hold out hope that Rie Miyazawa or Saki Takaoka may follow in Eri’s footsteps and go back to the hair nude shoots that made them stars?

The controversial ERO24TV telathon “boob aid” (Oppai Bokin) event took place on December 3rd. Famously it gives regular members of the public the chance to grope porn stars’ breasts for a few seconds, with all proceeds going to AIDS-related charitable causes.

Here’s a preview of what happens. Note how the patrons have to sterilize their hands before they can lay them on the holy vessels of the AV idols’ chests.

The “boob aid” event has not been without its critics, so much so that it attracted a petition to ban it last year. Thankfully it was not successful and the event is now wildly popular.

The weekend’s edition, which was held at a venue in Shinjuku, included the mammary talents of porn stars Yua Imai and Tsubasa Arisaka.

The results have been announced by organizers Paradise TV: the event was attended by 642 people and raised a whopping ¥588,000! The number of attendees was actually significantly lower than recent years, which attracted thousands. But the organizers seem to have reduced the number and status of the porn stars who take part, which would have a large impact on the crowd. This might be because the event was getting too much attention and facing “moral pressure.” The organizers seem to have changed, too, switching back to Paradise TV again after some time being run by Sky Perfect TV.

Gravure idol Nanami Moegi has posed semi-nude in the latest push in her career.

The 24-year-old, G-cup idol has released a steady stream of DVDs since she debuted in 2012, but has yet to hit the big league. Will this all change with her latest photo shoot?

This is a typical example of the “semi-nude” shoot — aka chakuero (chaku-ero) “clothed erotic” shoot — some idols do, as opposed to the fully nude ones that reveal pretty much everything, though often with the exception of their hairy bush.

Gravure idols Yuka Someya and Moemi Katayama both recently showed us other examples of this trend, while someone like Haruna Yabuki was braver, going the full hog and doing a nude shoot with the legendary Kishin Shinoyama.

Adored for her beautifully pucker lips and slinky figure, Nanami is clothed and covered up here, though only very ostensibly so. The see-through body tights or mud leaves hardly anything to the imagination.

She first came to our attention a few years back with the stunning selfies that she posted online.

It’s something of an open secret these days that all the commercial excitement comes from Nogizaka46, not AKB or its direct sister groups.

Photo books by the likes of Mai Shiraishi and Nanami Hashimoto have become runaway bestsellers, or photo shoots by Misa Eto have dazzled. Even more minor members such as Yumi Wakatsuki, Mai Shinuchi, Kazumi Takayama, and Miona Hori have established their reputations in recent times — at least in our consciousness.

But let’s not forget the official AKB48 sister groups. NMB48’s Miru Shiroma, for example, is a true star on the rise.

And now the Nogizaka46 sister group Keyakizaka46’s Neru Nagahama is planting her flag in the idol landscape as a starlet to watch.

She poses semi-nude for a new photo book, her first — and she seems determined to make a splash with her debut.

“Koko kara” (From Here) was published earlier this month by Kodansha and a reprint has already been ordered, according to media reports.

Whatever happens to Japan’s junior idols?

This is a controversial topic. Many find the idea of junior idols (or chidol) — girls often as young as their tweens or even younger — repellent and tantamount to encouraging pedophilia in the same way as lolicon.

However, it’s worth remembering that many gravure idols start their careers in their late teens and are technically below the age of adulthood in Japan (20 years old). So it’s not all about the specific genre of junior idols and things are very ambiguous when you start looking around.

After all, many music idols from groups like AKB48 or Momoiro Clover Z would also qualify as chidols in terms of age and some of photo shoots they take part in.

Some junior idols successfully “graduated” and have gone onto further careers as music idols (perhaps most famously, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu), gravure models, acting, and so on. Most, of course, just disappear into the ether, never to be seen again except for a few dog-eared photo books that do the rounds of online auctions.

Some become adult video stars and a few of these are at least known, though names are usually changed. One prominent recent example is Kana Minami — and what a young lady the Okinawa native has grown up to be!

Minami has just made her debut on S1 label in a release (SSNI00087) this month. Another DVD with a threesome theme is also set to come out in February. Interestingly, the first release is unashamedly playing up to her past as a junior idol in how she is presented, but the second one seems more mature in terms of what she is doing with her body.

We’re still not sure how old she is these days but we love her tanned skin. In our humble opinions, she certainly looks sexier than she did as childol Mai Ozora (大空舞), whose “image DVDs” and other old merchandise changes hands online for thousands of yen.

There comes a point in every Japanese porn star fan’s life when he (or she) has to accept the facts of reality.

Their favorite adult video idol will, at some point, retire from the industry, most likely into obscurity. Or they get married (at least, they do the rare thing of announcing this publicly while still famous).

Such is the case with Sola Aoi, the immensely popular JAV star who enjoys remarkable fame overseas.

Sola (or Sora) has not made an original porn release since 2011 but is still adored by legions of men, especially in China. Now, sadly, there is further obstacle between them and their goddess: the legal one of matrimony.

The 34-year-old Sola Aoi has got married, she announced on Instagram to her army of fans. Proving once again that the best way to get girls is to be a musician, her lucky new husband is the Japanese DJ Non.

They look like a relaxed, regular couple. It begs the question, though: did he spend years getting off on her AV before experiencing the real thing? And at the risk of being crude: does he mind going where so many other men have already gone before, not to mention hundreds of thousands have fantasized about going? Evidently not.

In addition to the wedding bells, from Sola’s hints we can probably expect the pitter-patter of tiny feet soon…

Aoi wrote on her blog on January 2nd: “I’ve always wanted to get married. I love kids and it’s always dreamed of starting a family… My husband is neither handsome nor rich, but he has removed all of my unease about my career in adult films.”

The marriage has garnered some mainstream media coverage. As always, we are amused to see Aoi labelled a “sexy actress” — the usual Japanese media euphemism for AV performer.

We wish the new couple all the happiness they deserve in their new life together.

Japanese movies rarely have sex scenes of note, it must be said, so the good ones stand out.

Japanese television is pretty tame, the occasional sexy scene not withstanding. But AbemaTV, an online streaming channel, has different standards.

Last year it broadcast its first original drama series, Tokumei Kakaricho Tadano Hitoshi, showing us Shoko Takahashi (formerly the gravure idol Shoko Takasaki) and Yua Mikami (ex-SKE48 idol Momona Kito) in the buff. All right, they are two of the top AV stars in Japan today, so we’ve already seen everything they have to offer and more. But it’s still nice to see a Japanese TV drama with some naked flesh for once.

The good news for 2018 is that the Tokumei Kakaricho Tadano Hitoshi, which is based on the manga by Kimio Yanagisawa, is back for a new series — and it has Shoko and Yua in it again in all their nude glory.

Unfortunately Yua Mikami isn’t in it this time, but the AV idol Moe Amatsuka is — playing, no surprises, a porn star. Yes, her acting is very natural.

Moe Amatsuka has a nice scene riding someone, though we don’t see much beyond some shots of her breasts. Shoko Takahashi is shown in an erotically lit love hotel with a lucky guy as well as stripping for a bored-looking older man.

We love the contrast in bust sizes here: Moe Amatsuka has a modest chest but energetic body, while Shoko Takahashi’s breasts are mammoth and heavy, and her body suitably curvy.

Other cast members these series include former AKB48 idol Mariko Shinoda, porn stars Ayaka Tomoda, Mion Sonoda, and Yuuka Oshima.

Actress and gravure idol Mami Yamasaki has done plenty of alluring photo shoots in her career, exploiting her girl-in-the-office looks.

But she’s gone one further with this December photo shoot in weekly tabloid magazine Flash, which seems to tread very narrowly along the border between nude and chakuero (clothed but nude). In some shots Mami is clearly naked but you can’t see anything.

The Osaka native is technically a jukujo (“ripe girl”), now she’s in her early thirties. But the hormones are doing wonders and she looks better than ever.

We see the 32-year-old effectively finger herself as well as reveal her butt. Her breasts remain under wraps but we can see her nipples pocking erotically through her clothes.

She released a full photo-book in March 2017, restarting her gravure career after a few years focusing on her acting, and her contract with her agency finished in autumn last year. Judging from what information we could find online, she’s freelance these days — so is perhaps willing to take more risks.

Next up? Sex scenes in a film, like her gravure colleague Anna Konno? Or perhaps a full-frontal hair nude shoot?

Since there are so few mainstream films released in Japan with decent nude scenes, we have to look back at past ones for entertainment.

We were recently marveling again at the busty delights of gravure idol and actress Megumi Kagurazaka in Guilty of Romance.

The 2011 film was directed by Sion Sono, who later made the sensible decision to marry Kagurazaka (despite quite an age gap of some twenty years).

The film is particularly worth revisiting for its sex scenes. Megumi Kagurazaka has multiple nude scenes and naked sex scenes throughout the film, mostly showing off her very ample chest. Be sure to see it!

Sono is much loved by the foreign critics and directs several films a year. One of those was the pink film Antiporno in which ex-AKB48 idol Ami Tomite stripped off.

Guilty of Romance also has nude scenes from Makoto Togashi, including a rather bloody scene while she rides cowgirl on a lucky (or is it unlucky?) guy, and Miki Mizuno, a one-time major star who was blacklisted from the industry and instead took riskier roles like this, in which she does full-frontal nudity from the start.

AKB48 is said to be phasing out swimsuit and lingerie photo shoots for its young members, perhaps out of fear of foreign accusations of peddling lolicon and child pornography as Tokyo prepares to for the 2020 Olympics.

There is speculation that the Akihabara-inspired supergroup, which builds followings for its female idols through swimsuit and underwear shoots as well as scantily clad music videos, is taming down its tactics.

Now members of high school age will apparently not be asked to reveal their flesh during photo shoots, it is reported.

A large proportion of AKB48’s members are under the age of adulthood in Japan (20 years old), which has added to the controversy over the sexualized lyrics and photo shoots. This effectively makes them junior idols (chidols). AKB has faced accusations of lolicon and even child pornography in the past, but has always got over any temporarily problem.

Should we be surprised by this latest development? Not really, given the strong likelihood that AKB48 will be involved with the Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Olympic Games. The movers and shakers may want to remove any taint of obscenity ahead of its global showcase.

So far, we should stress, this is all just speculation on a few blogs, originating from a Nikkan Cyzo article. AKS, the company behind AKB48 and its various spin-off “sister” groups, has yet to make any official comment confirming or denying the rumor.

If you were upset by Sola Aoi’s sudden marriage announcement, don’t worry: you still have a chance to marry a Japanese AV idol.

Asuka Hoshino had a career between 2010 and 2014, and is now trying to build a post-AV career. Presumably things are not going too well for her, since she’s now turning to her fans to pay her directly.

Still, she’s offering something original: a marriage ceremony!

Yes, you can “marry” Asuka Hoshino just by paying a fee. She will participate in a fake ceremony that you and the 31-year-old former porn star will plan together with a genuine wedding planning company, Ambitious.

The happy couple will wear formal wedding attire and have an initial meeting to decide the details about the wedding, which is held in a venue in Odaiba.

Apparently Hoshino’s real father will be on hand to “give her away” on the day, which may be a bit awkward considering potentially how much a real fan may have masturbated while watching his daughter have sex.

There won’t be a proper kiss, though, just a “pose” — and certainly no wedding night. Of course, minor porn stars are available at call girl services already and top stars always have plenty of rich boyfriends who “compensate” them for their time. So paying a porn star for sex is not unusual per se. But this time, the novelty is surely the wedding.

For ¥350,000 (US$3,150), you get your “wedding” with Asuka and even official photographs, but rings are not included.

Needless to say, there’s nothing legally binding about this “marriage” and it’s also not unique: Asuka will actually be marrying three lucky men as part of the campaign.
