What do AV actresses do on their days off? This is a question we often ponder. How many of the hot ladies wandering around Shinjuku and Shibuya are actually minor porn stars doing some shopping?

We’ve searched the archives a bit and found this revealing gem, which offers a tantalizing hint about what some of the more adventurous ladies get up to.

In April 2015, porn performer Sara Shinomiya spent her day off having her lovely body coated in cream and other sweet things — all for her friends to slowly lick off.

Another week, another idol photo book or major weekly magazine photo shoot. What’s special this time?

It’s not the latest release from the ranks of AKB48 or Nogizaka46 trying to break out (though Mai Shiraishi did that very well recently with her bestselling photo book), nor the latest has-been model or actress stripping off fully nude in a last-ditch attempt to relaunch a dying career. Nor is it attracting controversy for its content per se like the Tomomi Kasai photo book where she was pictured naked with a young boy (Kodansha eventually canceled the release).

Nothing like as a crazy as that one, but fans are are still furious about this photo shoot. Why? Because it has seiyuu (voice actresses).

The problem has been stirred up by Seiyu Paradise R, a monthly magazine about seiyuu. The upcoming July 14th issue is set to have six voice actresses posing as “swimsuit models” in the style of the manga Yomekura. Apparently this has angered fans of the seiyuu (Aguri Onishi, Hitomi Sasaki, Mayu Sagara, Erika Momota, Junna Amako, Shu Uchida).

This is a strange backlash, considering that none of the seiyuu are particularly famous or experienced with reputations to protect per se. But maybe this is the point for some — they are “pure” at the moment and the publisher is exploiting these relative newcomers.

However, a swimsuit shoot is also not especially gratuitous considering the semi-adult themes of Yomekura.

We have no qualms about calling out this minor online patter as patently ridiculous. There are plenty of examples of seiyuu who have blurred the boundaries between voice performer and gravure glamor model, not least the likes of Rie Tanaka, Haruka Tomatsu and Maaya Uchida. (Heck, Emi Niita allegedly appeared in porn in her early days!)

Are some sensitive souls online now saying that seiyuu should be invisible VA only for the whole of their careers?

Shocking. Fluorescent. Gaudy. Loud. Vular. Neon. Flashy. Tacky.

There’s a lot of epithets that can be applied to this new cosplay style that is like body art on psychedelic drugs, though none of them quite capture it.

Inspired by strange characters from anime, cinema and video games, behold the new Japanese subculture of ishoku-hada.

Certain sections of the Interweb are currently abuzz with breathless talk of this bizarre body painting and cosplay niche, which literally means “unique skin” or “unusual skin”.

Like an “alien” version of gyaru, ganguro or yamanba trends, women dress in extremely garish and skimpy outfits while their hair is dyed and bodies painted in outlandish colors: red, turquoise, yellow, pink, purple… you name it! (For obvious reasons, though, the “black” skin models might be offensive to some.)

For the curious, Kotaku has helpfully pinpointed some of the influences on ishoku-hada, including Avatar, Phantasy Star Online 2, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and Mystique. (It also reminds that prim and proper beauty Reiko Kikukawa painted her skin blue to advertise the Blu-ray release of Avatar a few years ago. Ah, good times in Tsutaya gazing at that poster.)

A handful of practitioners got noticed and it has started to spread online thanks to the Japanese editions of BuzzFeed and Huffington Post, though the number of people actually doing this is tiny.

What many have not noticed is that the main model behind this “trend”, miyako, is none other than popular (and very busty) gravure idol Miyako Akane, who is now also a porn star performing under the name Ema Yumekawa.

Akane took part in the ishoku-hada shoot in Kabukicho (at the notoriously lurid Robot Restaurant, it seems) and other models involved include Chieri Sunaga.

Less a new Shibuya street fashion trend, it’s more like a marketing stunt by gravure idols bringing together a bunch of influences. And look how successful it has proved at getting our attention!

Fingers crossed this makes it into the 2020 Olympics’ opening ceremony!

Earlier in the year we wrote about the upcoming porn debut of NMB48 idol Risako Okada. The 21-year-old did a full-frontal photo shoot to celebrate her AV release on the Muteki label under a new performer name, Miko Matsuda.

Okada/Matsuda (aka Risapoyo) was a member of the Osaka-based AKB48 sister group from 2011 to 2012.

She now joins a growing list of former AKB idols who have “graduated” on to porn careers.

Now the first pictures have appeared from here adult video, “Number 01″. While the set-up of the AV seems very straightforward indeed and hardly seems to have much of a budget to speak of, Okada herself seems giggly and happy to be joining so many of her previous colleagues.

There are more than a few bars and hostess clubs where you can have your drinks poured for you by AV actresses. There is also a new bar in Kabukicho by Weekly Playboy, where patrons are served by famous gravure idols.

But until now there hasn’t been a bar directly operated by an AV production company. In March, that all changed when a well-known AV maker opened a small girls’ bar in Kabukicho.

For the uninitiated, a girls’ bar is a kind of cheap hostess club, where there is a modest cover charge and the drinks are a bit more expensive than usual.

Nikkan Spa recently paid a visit to Vivi, where the lucky reporter was served by three AV porn stars: Sena Maikawa, Reno Aihara, and Reina Omori.

At Vivi, the drinks menu starts from ¥800, though you can also enjoy all-you-can-drink for an hour for just ¥4,000 (sales tax at 8% and service at 10% not included). It’s a pretty cheap way to hang out with porn stars.

Unfortunately the Vivi website doesn’t seem to list who is serving drinks at the moment, but the bar’s Twitter account does appear to give an indication of the actresses if you can read Japanese.

Kazuhito Kosaka, aka Daimaou Kosaka, aka Piko Taro, the comedian best known for his viral hit “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen”, has married his secret long-time girlfriend.

Aki Takajo is the latest former AKB48 idol to strip off.

Tomoko Nakajima was once a regular fixture on Japanese television screens.

The former comedian and TV personality suffered a scandal in 2011, when she suddenly disappeared from the spotlight and, it then turned out, was several months in arrears for her expensive condo and locked in a legal dispute.

Her troubles were rooted in the advice of a fortune-teller, who had been living with her since 2005 and seemed to have a strange influence over Nakajima. Many said she had been brainwashed. Her agency effectively sacked her in 2013 and her comedy duo, Othello, split up.

She has been making a slow recovery, appearing on TV and doing other bits of work. She has also harnessed one of her lesser-known assets: her looks.

Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe has called another lower house election. During these times we always think of the more unusual politicos or wannabe lawmakers.

Ito will now perform in AV under the new professional name of Moko Sakura. Will she become the new Yua Mikami? Difficult to say, given this is a crowded market. Nonetheless, we can’t wait to see the results of this sweet-looking lady’s porn debut.

On a recent Abema TV show, Ogiya Hagino Busu Terebi, thirtysomething jukujo Sayaka Isoyama made an astonishing confession.

One of Japan’s top porn stars today, Mana Sakura, has had her fully naked body recreated as a large figure.
